The Examination constitutes the following 3 stages carries a total of 1300 Marks:
- Stage 1: Preliminary Exam
- Stage 2: Mains Exam
- Stage 3: Personality Test
Stage 1: Preliminary Exam (Objective Papers: 500 Marks)
- Preliminary Exam is Objective type and consist of 2 papers which will be conducted in different sessions.
- Paper-1 is General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper, and Paper-2 is Engineering Discipline Paper.
- Paper-1 (General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper) carries a total of 100 Questions(200 Marks) and duration of the exam is 2 Hours.
- Paper-2 (Engineering Discipline Paper) carries a total of 150 Questions(300 Marks) and duration of the paper is 3 Hours.
- Only candidates qualified in Preliminary Exam (Stage-1) will be eligible for Stage 2.
Stage 2: Mains Exam (Conventional Papers: 600 Marks)
- Mains Exam is the subjective/conventional type and consist of 2 papers which will be conducted in different sessions.
- Paper-1 and Paper-2 are Engineering Discipline.
- Engineering Discipline Paper-1 carries a total of 5 to 8 Question(300 Marks), and duration of the paper is 3 Hours.
- Engineering Discipline Paper-2 carries a total of 5 to 8 Question(300 Marks), and duration of the paper is 3 Hours.
- Only qualified candidates in Preliminary Exam (Stage-1) and Mains Exam (Stage-2) will be eligible for Stage 3.
- Once a candidate successfully completes the written examination in the IES Exam 2018 he/she would have to go through a comprehensive personality screening test which is also known as the interview round.
- Those candidates qualify Stage-1, Stage-2 and Stage-3 will be considered for final merit list of ESE Exam provided by UPSC.

Candidates qualifying at this Stage (i.e. Stage I + Stage II +
Stage III) to be included in the Final Merit List of
Engineering Services Exam.
Thus the marks secured by the candidates in the Stage-I
(Objective type
papers) of the Engineering Services Examination should be
added to the
marks secured in the Stage-II (Conventional type papers) of
the
Examination and Stage-III (Personality Test) and accordingly,
such
marks secured by the candidates in Stage-I should also be
counted for
merit.
